thirteenth day of March One thousand eight hundred and ninety Between The Undersigned One of the Crown Agents for the Colonies of Downing street Westminster in the County of Middlesex acting for and on behalf of The Government of Hong Kong (hereafter called the Government) of the one part and William Chatham of the Dock Office, Cumberland Basin Bristol in the County of Somerset of the other part

Whereby it is agreed by and between the parties hereto as follows:-

1. The said William Chatham shall be appointed an Executive Engineer in the Public Works Department of the Colony of Hong Kong.

2. The period of service shall be for Three years commencing from the date of arrival in Hong Kong and he will be placed under the Orders of the Surveyor General of the Colony.

The salary to be paid to the said William Chatham shall be at the rate of Three thousand six hundred dollars ($3600) per annum with a Chair allowance of Twenty four dollars ($24) per month half salary from date of leaving England and full salary and the Chair allowance from the date of arrival in the Colony.

The Government shall have power at any time to terminate this Agreement upon giving to the said William Chatham three months notice in writing or paying him a sum equal to three months salary in lieu of such notice.

5. Free first class passages shall be provided for the said William Chatham his wife and child to Hong Kong and on
